Music+Concert= A Very Happy Zoey Lauren!

Concert is coming up. And, as most of you know, I am very musically involved. But, can music make you smarter? This is a response on nep-funkytune's blogpost on "Can Music Make You Smarter?" I personally think this is awesome! I love music. And to find out it as another plus, beside being one of the most relaxing/fun/awesome thing in hte world, it makes you SMARTER! And, it can help dislexic people! Great! Personally, I think the reason for this is the notes. You need to focus on each note, and persicion is everything. Even being a little off, you could be shart or flat. I know that because I am a viola player, so, persicion and reading notes is everything. And, after practice, your memory increases. I memorized the lyrics and notes to our school play adution song in ONE NIGHT! Yeah, I know there is some scientific reason with the left part of the brain stem or somthing, but, it's great when you can learn and benifit from music. In fact, I am in the mood to go play my viola a bit myself. Ciao!

I know the last one was late.. But this is CURRENT ACTION NEWS!!!!

Summary: The Big Bang atom smasher is fixed! After a year of expensive repairs, this atom collider is ready to go. The purpose of this machine to to create conditions that would have happened one or two trillionth of a second after the Big Bang supposedly happened. Scientists and Physicists are extremely pleased, because so far tests and experiments have been running smoothly.

What happened: The particle accelerator at Fermi Labs is working and running smoothly again.

Why: This machine shows conditions of what would the universe be like after the Big Bang.

My Opinion:

This is extremely cool! If you read this a think about it, science has come a very long way. IT is really amazing that they can recreate these conditions and environments, so we know about our beginnings.

What do you think when I say this. World fastest man adopts world fastest animal. Yeah, I don't know what to think either, so I'm asking you....

Who: Usain Bolt and his new cheetah, Lightning Bolt.

What Happened: Usain Bolt, the record holder for track hurdles, pays to adopt a baby cheetah as a new pet. Obviously, the cheetah won't live with him. Instead, Lightning Bolt shall live in a reserve.

Why: He wanted to raise awareness for endangered species.

If you keep reading this article, at a private photo shoot, Usain was asked to pose with a lion. He nearly ran away. Yet, he'd hold a baby cheetah and feed it when cameras were flashing... Poor cheetah, caught in a publicity stunt...



My Opinion: It's always good for a celebrity to endorse something. Especially something that has to do with life. I applaud Usain for taking this step and adopting the adorable cheetah. I mean, look at the little guy! *aww*

I think this is a very intresting thing to know. This study proves that canines are quick at learning skills, while it would take primates extensive training to do so. Also, it is cool how they designed this test. It was smart, it was to the point, and it didn't harm the animals. One question I have is why does hyenas and dogs learn these things better than primates? Is it because they grew up that way? Does it have somthing to do with their brains? All in all, the article was very well written, and it was to the point. It also showed somthing new!

Trckstr' Awsum Blog- Solids, Liquids, and Gases article

This blog was really good! Why? Well, it was to the point, and gave all the information in a simple, coordinated way. Also, this blog used pictures to help the reader understand and learn more. So, here is what I learned. Solid molocules are close together, and tightly packed. Liquid molocules are free to move, but stay close together. And Gases just go everywhere, trying to get as far away as possible. And then, there is plasma. That happens when the the gas molocules are moving so fast the electrons are stripped from them. Did you know plasma is one of the well known matter in the universe, but isn't found on earth. Huh, go figure. One question for this article is how does the electrons get stripped, and how are they put back together in deionization? I hope I can figure this out. But, all in all, I appluad this article! It was good!

This blog was crazy! (I say that in the it-was-totally-awesome way) It was about the new exoplanets found with HARPS, a super powerful telescope. Personally, I thought HARPS was a union for all professional harp teachers.... Anyways, this blog really interested me! It showed that we are one step in a journey closer to finding another, "earth," even life! This really excites me. I am in the mood to go and google this topic right now!

jetsfan21- Clever New Device Sees Through Walls

This was probally the coolest blog out of all of these. So, there is a new device that uses radio topography to see images. That is using radio waves to find objects. Like what dolphins do to find food. (Why can't I remember that word when I need it?!) This would be really helpful in a fire, to save lives and find hidden people. But, like Hannah Montana said, nobody's perfect, like this project. It still has glitches that need to be solved. But, this is really interesting. One question I have is how do you manage to test an object like this. I know, it says that in the blog. But is there a way to prove to common people that it works? This device is sort of like a superhero, huh? X-RAY VISION!

This was a new thing! DId you know fish could tell diffrences between enemy and food, ect. This reminds me of this book i read as a kid. Dolphins were tested to do the same thing. They would have two targets, and they would hit the right one. It is kind of cool to see that fish can do the same thing. I always thought all fish did was swim and eat. Now, I'm proven wrong. Too bad I can't get one. The last one I had, my cat ate.

BONES (No, not the skeleton bones, silly! The TV show!)

Okay, so everyone has seen or have heard of this show once. Why am I bringing this topic up? Well, it's all about the Bones. Yes, I am talking about the fabulous show starring DR. TEMPERANCE BRENNAN (Emily Deschanel) And Special Agent Booth (David Boreanaz). Yes, this is my FAVORITE SHOW IN THE UNIVERSE!!! (I write that in all caps for a reason) Anyways, the last episode (or a few nights ago), They found the dead body of a chicken-man. Bones couldn't believe it herself, but, when they were checking out the body, there was a parasite in the guys throat that was only FOUND IN CHICKENS! And, when Angela did a face sketch, the guys nose looked like a chicken's beak! No kidding, it was long and hanging, sort of like Squidwards nose! At the end, well just watch the episode. But, I learned three important things.

1. ALWAYS BE CAREFUL! If you aren't, the enviroment you are in may hurt you.
2. Joints are very important in the body. It can lead to causes of death. So are bone brusies!
3. Chemical changes and physical appearances are VERY IMPORTANT in science. They can show damage, even solve unknown situations!

Watch the show! You don't only learn somthing, you enjoy it!

What is the Komodo Dragons origen?

"Why are you sticking your tongue out at me? Huh?"

Okay, so this isn't a question you ask yourself often. Where did the Komodo Dragon start off? I know, weird right. But, while scrolling in yahoo news, I found this article. Origin of Komodo Dragon Revealed (click link to see article), made me think this question. Its like asking yourself, "Why do buses move?" Well, enough of my mini-rant. Lemmie show you what I learned!

Who: The Komodo Dragons of Indonesia.
What: Where do these lizards come from?
When: The Komodo Dragon lived in Indonesia for thousands of years, (well, not thousands. You'll see why)
Where: Australia (Are you thinking, "Australia??")

My-super-but-not-so-brief-article-paraphrase: Komod0 Dragon fossils are being found in Australia. But, they are being dated to about 300,000 years before humans came along! This "species," of Komodo dragon went extinct, but maybe moved onto Indonesia while the two places were still, "one piece." Environmental disasters like tsunamis, earthquakes, and volcanoes may have separated Indonesia and Australia. But, the remaining Komodo dragons may have lived in Indonesia.

My Opinion: Even though these are lizards, I personally think it's super cool! Its great so see how things happened and why they did. But, personally, I like unexplained things, they give you time to fantasize on all the possible possibilities! Also, I think these lizards are kind of cute.... Maybe one day I'll go to Indonesia.....

Extra, extra! Gigantic carnivirous plant in SouthAsia can ACTUALLY wolf down a RODENT!

OMG!!!!!!

Yes, the title says it all. There is actually a big carnivirous plant in the world. Yes. Carnivious plants. Is it an oxymoron? I think yes. Well, back to science. :D. The Nepenthes rajah is a carnivirous plant that can grow FOUR FEET LONG! That's about long enough to stick your hand up to your elbow in. Notice I said about..... Well, anyways. This plant is filled with liquids, and has a pitcher shape. The edge and inside of the plant has a nectar, which attracts bugs, even frogs and rodents like mice! Is the prey falls in, its over. Hasta la vista, baby. The lid shuts, and the eynzimes and acids make the animal food. Fasinating, isn't it??? Well, this plant is still one of the largest plants out there. But, sometimes, animals like mice are big enough to escape. Other times, hmm, not so much! The plant was discovered in 1985, but apearntly, researchers here heard of it in 2000 when a Christian missionary was taking a hike, found the plant, and reported it to the newspapers in SouthAsia. Pretty cool, huh? This article especially intrests me because plants are known not to move. I mean, I know they move to follow the sunlight. And morning glories close after "morning," is offically over. And plants usually eat whats in the ground. But the thought of plants, "catching," their own prey is totally mind-boggling. I googled around, and appearently, these types of plants, "zenus fly-traps, pitcher plants, ect." have special hairs inside. If the hairs are touched, they trigger the trap and eat their food. This is wickedly cool, don't you think so too?

Plasticity Lab: The Weirdest Thing in the World!

Hi! Today, we did a lab about the plasticity of the mantle. We used Cornstarch, water, a beaker, a spoon, and some blue food coloring. We mixed together about 1/4 cup of water and 1/3 cup of cornstarch. Using the spoon, we combined the two materials. Slowly, the mixture got harder to combine, and, gave the appearance of a solid. We put two drops of blue food coloring to color the, "concoction," and mixed a little more. By the end, we had a mysterous, blue, solid-looking, thing in the beaker. But, you can't judge a book by its cover, right? When I reached my hand into the beaker to grab some of it, it came out like a plastic ball. I held it in my hand, and in two seconds, IT MELTED! Thats right, it looked like a solid, and melted in my hand, like water! My instructor told me that this was called, "plasticity." Apperantly, it was how the mantle inside the earth was like! I pushed my finger in slowly, and the mixture bended around my finger. But, when I pushed my finger in fast, it broke apart. My instructor told me this was, "bending and breaking caused by stress. The same thing happens when the earth goes under stress. The stress by our fingers is doing the same thing as the earth." Isn't that cool?
In my opinion, this was a solid and a liquid. Its a soliquid! I think it is both because it was a solid, but, behaved like a liquid. When handled, this mixture is weird. How is this like the earth's mantle? Well, it is because it was a solid and a liquid. Next thing was isotasy, which explained why everything floated.

October Sky: My First School Movie Review!!!

Okay, so, in homeroom, we watched the movie, "October Sky." It was about a boy named Homer, is a total "jock." But, when watching the Soviet shuttle , Sputnik, fly over the sky of his hometown, the rockets orbit inspires Homer to start Rocketry. So, he does, and him and his friends, Roy Lee, and Odell, and the school math geek, Quentin. They begin experimenting and researching, and makes a rocket, which blows up his mothers new fence. They hike and build a base in a field of rocks, and, continue to test out their, "exploding rockets." Then, when a neighborhood steel man comes to watch their rocket, he tells them that the rockets explode from air bubbles, and, the base metal is too weak to stand the heat. So, the boys take metal from a nearby railroad track...But, they run into more obstacles. If you want more, you need to watch the movie!!
This movie has many Science/Math connections. First off, these boys study physics and engineering to create a rocket that actually flies. Secondly, the towns main business, the coal mine, is serious work. They cut and slay coal to be burned, and even turned into electricity and cement. Next, there is a science fair. Homer presents his knowledge on rockets, and his discovery, and, wins the national science fair. The Russians satellite, Sputnik, also plays an important role in the movie. First, it inspires the boys to start their, "mission." But, later, Homer drops out of school because his father was hurt coaling. He becomes a coal miner. As he goes down the elevator, he sees Sputnik flying, and is heartbroken that he had to give up his education and his dream. Next, these boys prove their innocence using math. Homer and his friends are arrested at school for starting a forest fire with their rockets. After, Homer drops out of school, but, is given a book by his teacher and inspiration, Mrs. Reilly. When Homer is free, he studies Rockets angles and locations. He goes with Quentin, and, find his rocket close to where they predicted it would land. He shows this formula to the authorities, and they predict a flare from a nearby airport started the blaze. Homer shows his invention to the science fair afterwards, and gets back in school. Also, there are health dangers. In the end, there are vignettes on what happens later. You learn that Mrs. Reilly dies of Hodgkin's Disease, a type of white blood cell cancer. She dies shortly after the boys launch their last rocket, the Mrs. Reilly. Another Vignette is about the father, John Hickman, the father who strongly disapproves of Homers beliefs and loves his mine. He dies of Black Lung Disease, which is from inhaling too much coal dust. Its effects are the same as tobacco chewing or smoking cigarettes.
At our school, we use CARES. This stands for cooperation, assertion, respect, empathy, and self-control. CARES is used through this movie. C, for Cooperation, is used with the four boys. Homer, Quentin, Roy Lee, and Odell all worked together to create a successful rocket, and, their invention won them the national science fair. A, for assertion, is used when Homer is with his dad. His dad strongly disapproves what Homer does, and, Homer relaxes himself and ignores it. R, for respect, is used with the peers. The steel man helps the young ones with their rocket. He treats them like grown men, and doesn't look down on them. E, for empathy, is used when Homer drops out of school. Homer's dad gets in an accident, and, is unable to work. So, Homer drops out of school and goes to the coal mine, in empathy of his family and father. And, lastly, S is for Self Control. This is used when Homer is arrested. The authorities arrest him, and, Homer and his friends relax themselves and stay calm, although they are in handcuffs. CARES is really expressed through this movie, and is a good example for Students.
All in all, this movie is AMAZING! It is a must see for others school, or with your family. It is the most wonderful hearwrencher, and is really a half and half. This movie is fantastic.

My thoughts.....

I read tinkywinkyx123's blog the other day. There was something posted on Celiac Disease that really caught my attention.

Well, based on her description, Celiac Desiese affects the small intestine. When these people eat food with wheat, (bread and such), it becomes a toxin. The patient gets bloating, and other extremely uncomfortable symptoms. Personally, I have heard of this disease before. And, the effects of having a simple PB&J sandwich are disastrous. I feel bad for people with this disease. For starters, they can never have the things people enjoy, such as, lasagna, pasta, bread, or a simple grilled cheese sandwich or burger. Instead, they have to eat other things. I would certainly love to help people with this genetic disorder. It would be fantastic if scientist were able to create bread or other meals that contain glutton, without the glutton. Get what I'm saying? Good. I, personally, have a few questions. Doesn't glutton contain fiber? And starcheProxy-Connection: keep-alive

3F How do people with this disorder get this necessities? Do they need a pill or something? Also, if a child gets the disease, what exactly is included in this diet? I would certainly like to know. Thinking about this disease, its really not that bad. These kids can live a regular life, just, with a diet. So, I would definitely love to meet someone with this disease. I can learn something new. This disease is sad, but, there is always somewhere over the rainbow, where doctors find a cure.

Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD)

 Adrenoleukodystrophy, or ALD, is a rare, genetic disorder that affects boys within the ages of four to ten years. Basically, it is a disease that causes the loss or destruction of the myelin sheath surrounding nerve cells in the brain. It also causes the progressive dysfunction of the adrenal gland. That makes long, fatty chains of acid form, and damage nerve cells, which leads to slurred speech, deafness, blindness, coma, and eventually, death. The mortality of this disease is over 85% of its patients.  ALD was discovered in 1993, which is recent. So, if you inferred, there is still a whole lot unknown about this disorder. At first, children seem "normal." But, as time goes on, they get behavior problems, such as ADD or ADHD, temper tantrums, and poor performance in school or other assignments/tasks. But, as time goes on, more symptoms show up, such as gait, auditory and urinary disturbances, slow progressive stiffness, weakness in the lower limbs, disorders relating to attention deficit, and hyperactivity. Eventually, the child's fatty acid levels rise, bringing destruction to the brain. This can be found during a CT scan or acid tests. The disease only appears in males, due to having two X chromosomes. Women can only be carriers, because they have one X chromosome. The disease happens in 1-20,000 children in the United States. On the molecular level, this disease is caused by an AG deletion on the nucleotide 1801-1802. This only happens on two X chromosomes. There is still much to understand about this rare disorder, but, a few treatments are available now. For example, patients can be put on steroids, a diet of low fat and bone marrow transplant. The most recent cure, which only works if discovered early enough, is called Lorenzo's Oil. With a combination of regular cooking oils, this can out balance the developments of fatty acids, and, bring the acid level back to normal. This was discovered by two parents wanting to cure their child, Lorenzo.

How to extract DNA!!!

This is how you extract DNA!! First, take 1/2 cup of green peas or another DNA source, 1 cup of water, and 1/8 teaspoon of salt, and mix it in a blender for about 15 seconds. Then, strain the mixture through a sieve to remove all the unblended peas. Next, add 2 tablespoons of detergent and mix carefully. Let that sit for 5-10 minutes. Afterwards, fill a test tube with about 1/3 cup of the pea liquid, and dip a stick in it. Then, take the stick and put in meat tenderizer. After that, mix the meat tenderizer into the pea liquid. Next, tilt the test tube and carefully pour alchohol on the side, so it lays on top. When you put the alchol in, you start to see a stringy white thing. Voila, thats DNA!!

When: This was discovered on Tue Mar 3.

Where: In Space. (duh!)

Why: This was an amazing discovery because it is rare to find galaxies revolving around eachother. Ultimatly, one galaxy will die.

Who: Rare jaguars!!

What: Rare sightings of Jaguars were found! One was in Mexico, which happened a century ago. Another was in America.

Where: Mexico and the United States.

Why: Jaguars are usally never seen in the wild in these areas! Its like finding a fish that lives in the desert!

My Opinion: This is amazing! Jaguars are amazing creatures, and i am happy that more have come down here to be free!

Why: Scientists are always trying to find new types of life on their planet. Well, looks like they found another!!

Social Studies Local News

Breaking news!! FirstEnergy power company has cut SIXTEEN jobs in New Jersey!! This high state power generating company has to cut jobs due to the economic crisis. Although state has given money to the company to keep the jobs, it just wasn't enough. The company issued bankrupt a few weeks ago. I think that this is extremly bad for the families of New Jersey. How will they pay their morgadge or rent? Food? Supplies? Money is a very important thing right now, and if families don't get money, they can get into poverty faster than milk getting shipped from Wisconsin to Pennslyvania! The article site, Nj.com, has one quote that striked me. "Other cuts include 216 jobs in Ohio and 103 in Pennsylvania." (Nj.com, job cuts) What?? This is INSANITY! All those people are bam, in poverty! And, how hard is it to get a job now? All in all, the goverment better do somthing soon, otherwise, its the depression, AGAIN!

Social Studies Current Events: National News

Barack Obama and his Wife, Michelle Obama, walk on the 52nd Inaugural Parade.




Hello, Ms.Kmiec, and everyone else who is reading this! This is my social studies blog! Well, we all saw in the auditorium OBAMA BECOMING PRESIDENT! His speech was extremely motivating and inspirational, so, i am going to do my national news assignment on him! These two articles come from Yahoo and The New York Times News.


These issues talk about a moment this year that is history in the making. Coming so far from slavery, we finally have an African American president! Barack Obama won the hearts of all Americans, and went to the White House for his official swearing-in ceremony. His speech afterwards made women cry and men bow their heads in honor. Today, we were all proud to be an American!
My first article told about President Obamas' inauguration, and some events that happened during this famous day. When Dick Chenning and George W. Bush Jr. came to the stage, they got cheers, and boos. Also, one of the democratic leaders, Senator Kennedy, got ill during the luncheon. Being rushed to the hospital, Obama bid him good luck and goodbye. He got rushed because his brain cancer worsened. One quote in the article was, "Still, he bluntly warned, "To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West — know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy."" This was a line in his speech that affected us all. It meant, the U.S are willing to be friends, but to those who want to fight, we will put up a battle. This really showed how our country defended our freedom, and really explained Iraq and Afghanistan.
The second article tells about Obama's speech, and a little more about Bush. Practically half of the crowd booed him and his vice, Dick Chenning, when they approached the stage. But still, Bush held a neutral face and spoke. And the crowd, extremely persistent, listened. It also explained how almost 30,000 people from each state gathered in the 17 degree chill to watch Obama get sworn in. One quote in the article was, "Yet there was Mr. Obama, blaming America’s economic peril to an era “of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age.” This line meant that somebody caused out economy crash. And to many, it was obvious that it was Bush.
This articles really meant a lot to me. As Poet Alexander said, "We have one again scratched the stone of history." Obama will be a good president, and lead us to victory. But well, George, I wish you a live, if mobs don't attack you already.

Who: Seven elephants at the San Diego Zoo.

What: These elephants gave up their treats in 2000, and ever since zookeepers enforced new diets and exercise, these elephants lost 11,314 pounds!!
